Support New Recordings
One of the major objectives of the Stanford Society is to encourage and support new recordings of Stanford’s music, particularly of works that have not previously been recorded. Recent projects supported by the Society have included the first CD completely devoted to Stanford’s partsongs. This recording on the SOMM label (SOMM CD0128) includes 25 of the more than 100 partsongs that Stanford wrote including several premier recordings.
On the EM Records label the Society supported the first recordings of Stanford’s Second Violin Concerto (Opus 162) (EMR CD023) and the Mass in G (Opus 46) (EMR CD021). The Society also supported the recently released recording of Stanford anthems and canticles by the Choir of Winchester College conducted by Malcom Archer on the CONVIVIUM label (CR027). This release included three first recordings.
Future plans include recording more of the partsongs and solo songs, the early concertos , the unknown anthems, choral works and the piano music.
The Society’s next major recording project is to record Stanford’s eight String Quartets and two String Quintets. They will be recorded on the SOMM label by the highly regarded Dante Quartet. Seven of these ten major chamber works will be receiving first recordings. Professor Jeremy Dibble is editing the four unpublished String Quartets and the Second String Quintet for these recordings.
The first recording in this cycle will be of the String Quartets Numbers 5 and 8. The Society is currently seeking funding to support the cost of these recordings. If you are interested in helping with this project please contact the Society’s Chairman, John Covell at jccovell@msn.com for more details.
