Stanford at the Proms

Stanford will be featuring in three Proms concerts this year including the Last Night of the Proms on 8th September 2018 alongside Parry, Elgar and Wood.

Stanford last made an appearance in the Last Night of the Proms in 1928 when two of his works were programmed. Coincidentally, the first work was Songs of the Sea, Op.91 (which will also be the work featuring in this year’s Last Night of the Proms) and the second was Sea-Wrack (which was a Proms premiere). Previous to this, Stanford’s work Five Sonnets from ‘The Triumph of Love’ Op.82 was featured in the 1909 Last Night of the Proms.

There have been a smattering of Stanford’s works appearing in the Proms with the most recent being his Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op.126 in 2008 and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A Major in 2009 (performed in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales).

Please follow the links below for more information on the concerts featuring Stanford’s works in this year’s Proms.

Stanford’s most performed work at the Proms is his Irish Rhapsody No.1 in D minor, Op.78 which was first performed in 1906. This work also featured in the First Night of the Proms in 1911.
