Stanford’s first opera, The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan, is to be given in a concert performance at 5.00pm on Monday 28th October, 2019 at the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland.

The Veiled Prophet was completed in February 1879 and given its premier in Hanover, Germany on 6th February 1881 in a German translation conducted by Ernst Frank. The opera received two further productions in Hanover and a revised version was given in Italian at Covent Garden, London on 2nd June, 1893. There is no record of any further performances or of any performance in English.

The Wexford performance,
which will be the premiere in English of the original 1881 version, will be
conducted by David Brophy.  Stanford
expert Professor Jeremy Dibble of Durham University is editing the manuscript
score for performance. This production is being presented by Heritage Music
Productions with financial support from The Arts Council of Ireland. The
October 28th concert performance will be recorded for later release on CD.

Professor Dibble
will give a pre-performance talk on the opera on 28th October.

Further information on this performance can be found by visiting the Wexford Opera website. Contact the Wexford Opera Box Office to check ticket availability.
