The Stanford Society is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury in his home town of York after a long illness.

Sir Stephen assisted with the founding of The Stanford Society in 2007 and welcomed the society to a number of joint festivals with the Herbert Howells Society. He was a great exponent of the works of British composers, creating high quality recordings of sometimes rarely performed works.

Stephen Cleobury took up the post of Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge in 1982 and helped the choir to reach worldwide renown, championing new and traditional choral music over his tenure.

He will be deeply missed by all in the world of music.
