Birmingham 2019

Left to Right: Jeremy Dibble (President & Stanford biographer), David Hardie (Director of Music at Birmingham Cathedral), Alison Dibble, Daniel Wilkinson (Honorary Secretary), John Covell (Chairman).

In 2019, the Stanford Society went to Birmingham to explore the links between Stanford and Birmingham.

The Saturday consisted of a Symposium with talks on Stanford’s relationship with Elgar and Bantock’s letters punctuated by chamber recitals featuring music by Stanford’s pupils and contemporaries as well as his own. In the evening, the Stanford Society gala dinner was hosted in the Bank restaurant in the centre of Birmingham.

Sunday morning saw the society attend Eucharist at Birmingham Cathedral with the service music consisting of Stanford’s works before attending a concert given by the CBSO featuring Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, Dukas’ Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Saint-Saens’ Symphony No. 3 – Organ Symphony.
